Ensuring High-Quality Lithium Batteries in Solar Street Lighting Systems

500 2025-06-30 Sky Lin Solar

The battery carries the highest weight proportion in the entire solar street light system. When using brand-new Grade A batteries with fully guaranteed capacity, the lighting duration and backup days for cloudy/rainy weather will reliably meet customer requirements.

Currently, lithium batteries used in street lights include brand-new Grade A 3270 cells and second-life prismatic batteries. While brand-new batteries come at a higher price, they guarantee 100% quality. Second-life batteries are more cost-effective and generally maintain normal street light operation without issues.

Early street light systems used lead-acid or gel batteries, though gel batteries are now less common due to their limited cycle life, typically with a 3-year warranty. Current mainstream options are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and ternary lithium batteries.

**LFP batteries outperform ternary lithium in high-temperature resistance:**

- *Thermal stability*: LFP batteries excel with decomposition beginning only at ~600°C, while ternary lithium starts dissolving at ~300°C with higher thermal risks.

- *Thermal runaway threshold*: LFP withstands temperatures above 800°C, whereas ternary lithium triggers thermal runaway at ~200°C.

- *Nail penetration test*: LFP shows minimal temperature fluctuation, taking 2 minutes to reach 300°C peak. Ternary lithium temperatures spike rapidly to 400-600°C within 10 seconds, posing combustion risks.

These advantages explain why LFP batteries dominate the market. With technological advancements and market demands, LFP prices have become more competitive than previous years, further benefiting residential and commercial energy storage applications.

**For solar street lights:** Brand-new Grade A batteries remain the top recommendation. High-power fixtures (>30W) should prioritize them for reliability, while second-life batteries may be considered for low-power garden lights if cost reduction is crucial. Ultimately, product quality directly determines lighting performance and warranty coverage – making it absolutely critical.
